The Questionnaire with Julian Smith / By Dotan Schachter
May 5th, 2010 • Categories: Actors, Filmmakers, Random Questionnaires, WritersWhat are you doing these days?
Trying to find more time for videos and sketches with everything else I have going on! This is, by far, the craziest time of my life. I’m trying my best to play my cards right.
What turns you on creatively?
It’s a lot more anti-climactic than you’d expect. Usually my ideas come when I’m talking to a friend or when I witness something hilarious while I’m out and about. I keep a list with me at all times – it’s full of random things I’ve seen/heard that I integrate into almost everything I create.
If you were a mind-reader whose mind would you like to read?
I’d read a mind-reader’s mind. The world would implode.
If you could travel in time, which era would you visit?
I think I’d go back to the 80’s and tell everyone to chill out.
What is your favorite sound?
Laughter.
What is the album or song that influences you the most?
I’m the worst person to ask these kinds of questions. I don’t have a favorite song, band, or movie. I enjoy all art – it just depends on the day.
Who would you like to collaborate with? And why?
One day I’d love to collaborate with David Fincher, Robert Zemeckis, Quentin Tarantino, or Steven Spielberg. They’ve been huge inspirations to me over the years.
What drives you crazy?
As crazy as this sounds, I get the most frustrated when I see people with God given talents who aren’t motivated to do anything with them. If you want to go somewhere you have to get in the car and pull out of the driveway. Talent without drive is like a million multiplied by zero.
What makes you laugh?
I find the weirdest things to be funny. I’ll laugh at grammatical errors that make you sound like a hillbilly while we’re talking. The best kind of humor is when it’s at someone else’s expense. I kid, I kid. No, but seriously… it is.
If you had 3 wishes what would they be?
I don’t think the world needs three wishes – that’s too easy. I think life is balanced perfectly with negatives and positives so that we can learn and grow. I’m not saying it’s good that there are people who are starving and sick, but I am saying that if you’re blessed to be one of the people who aren’t, then make a difference. It isn’t about the payoff; it’s about the journey, the struggle. When we feel the urge to change something, we should get off our butts and do it. Anything less is cheating.
What is the craziest thing you ever did?
The first thing that comes to mind is something I did when I was about 14 or 15 years old. I actually managed to set up a date between two complete strangers. I didn’t know them, they didn’t know each other. It’s probably the funniest thing I’ve ever done, but it’s much too complicated to read. I’ll post a vlog with the full story, for those of you who are interested.
What makes you feel embarrassed?
This pair of jeans I have that won’t stay zipped.
What are your favorite web-sites (not including the ones that you are participate in)?
I love The Onion and StumbleUpon.
What is the silliest thing you have ever done?
One time I took my electric guitar and amp to a mall, set up shop in a restroom stall and soloed along with the smooth jazz playing over the speakers. It was funny hearing the people at the urinals trying to figure out why the solo was so much louder than the rest of the music.
How would you make the world a better place?
I’d teach people commenting on YouTube videos proper punctuation and grammar.
What is your biggest weakness?
I’m stubborn, forgetful, and sometimes I jump to conclusions. But I’m working on these.
Where will you be in 10 years?
I’ll be sitting in the back of the theatre throwing popcorn at people who don’t like my movie.
Write a question that you like to ask yourself and answer it.
I get asked for advice from aspiring filmmakers and such, so I guess I’ll go with that.
QUESTION: What would your advice be to aspiring filmmakers and artists?
ANSWER: Tell yourself from the beginning that you’re not going to give up, no matter what. People will try to tell you “no” your whole life. They’ll tell you that there’s no way to do what you want to do and that you’re aiming for the stars. And they’re right – you are aiming for the stars. But if you aim high, you’ll hit high. Aim low, you’ll hit low. Be respectful of your friends’ and family’s advice to you, but don’t let it keep you from doing your thing.
Who would you like to answer that Questionnaire?
Rhett & Link, iJustine, and Mitchell Davis
